How to Yarn Over Slip Stitch in Crochet
The Yarn Over Slip Stitch in crochet is also known as the Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch. This is a great textured crochet stitch that works up quickly. I love how this stitch gives the same look to both sides of my crochet projects. If you can slip stitch, chain, and half double crochet you can easily crochet yarn over slip stitch (YO Sl St). Materials Needed to Yarn Over Slip Stitch in Crochet:
Any size crochet hook (I used a size J – 6.0mm Clover Soft Touch crochet hook for this tutorial)
Yarn in whatever weight you would like (I used a medium weight size 4 yarn for this tutorial)
How to Start the Yarn Over Slip Stitch in Crochet:
To begin, the yarn over slip stitch (AKA Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch) is started with any number of chains. There is no multiple for this crochet stitch.
Now, start by chaining your desired number of stitches.
Step 1:
After chaining, the first YO Sl St will be worked into the 2nd chain from the crochet hook.
Now, yarn over.
Yarn Over Slip Stitch – Step 2:
After yarning over, insert the hook into the 2nd chain from the crochet hook.
Step 3:
Thirdly yarn over and pull through EVERYTHING that is currently on the hook. There is one loop on the crochet hook at the end of this step. This completes one YO Sl St.
Remaining Yarn Over Slip Stitches Across the Chain:
Finally, keep repeating steps 1-3 across the chain.
Going to Another Row of Yarn Over Slip Stitches – Step 1:
First, when going to the next row of Yarn Over Slip Stitches (Half Double Crochet Slip Stitches), chain 1 and turn to start.
Step 2 – Additional Rows of YO Sl St:
Next, Yarn Over and insert the hook into the first stitch.
Yarn Over Slip Stitch in Crochet – Step 3 (Additional Rows):
Now we YO again and pull through EVERYTHING that is on the crochet hook. There will be one loop of yarn left on the hook at the end of this step. This is ONE completed YO Sl St.
Tip #1 for Success with the Yarn Over Slip Stitch:
First, make sure that the last stitch of the row gets a crochet stitch. Sometimes this stitch is difficult to see. Look at the pictures below to see what the last stitch of the row looks like.
YO Sl St Tip for Success #2:
Finally, knowing where to work your crochet stitches is key with the Yarn Over Slip Stitch. The tops of the YO Sl St actually lean towards the front of the work rather than directly on top of the work. Make sure to identify where the tops of the crochet stitches are.
