What Is The Front Post Double Crochet Stitch?
The Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) is a textured crochet stitch made by working a double crochet around the post of the stitch from the previous row, rather than through the top loops of the stitch. This causes the stitch to sit slightly forward from the fabric, creating a raised, three-dimensional texture. Front Post Double Crochet is often used to add definition and texture to crochet blankets, scarves, hats, baskets, and other projects. It is also commonly used alongside Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC) to create ribbing and decorative patterns.
Ways To Use the Front Post Double Crochet Stitch
The Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) is a versatile stitch that can be used to add texture, dimension, and visual interest to all kinds of crochet projects. It works especially well for creating raised patterns, ribbing, cables, borders, and geometric designs, and it can be combined with other post stitches to create beautifully textured fabrics. Try using FPDC in crochet blankets, scarves, hats, cowls, sweaters, cardigans, pillows, baskets, and washcloths. Itâs also a great stitch to use when you want certain sections of your project to stand out or have a more three-dimensional look.

Helpful Tips for Success with The Front Post Double Crochet Stitch
When crocheting the Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC), itâs important to keep your tension relaxed so the stitch doesnât become too tight. Make sure you insert your hook around the post of the stitch from front to back and back to the front, rather than working into the top loops. As you work, keep your stitches consistent in height and avoid pulling the yarn too tightly when completing the stitch. It can also help to count your stitches as you go, especially when FPDC is being used to create a specific pattern or design. If youâre new to post stitches, practice a few rows on a small swatch first. Youâll quickly get a feel for where to place your hook and how the raised stitches should look.
Multiples for the FPDC
There are no multiples for this crochet stitch. Chain as many as you would like. Keep in Mind that you will lose 2 stitches because we work our first stitch into the 3rd chain from the crochet hook.
How to Start
Begin by chaining however many chains you would like.
NOTE: You could also start this stitch by Foundation Double Crocheting as many as you would like. If you choose this option, skip to ROW 2. The Foundation Double Crochet combines the chain and Row 1.

Row 1
First Row 1 is a row of regular Double Crochet Stitches. These will be the posts that we work around in the following row.
Now we begin by working into the 3rd chain from the crochet hook. Note: I like to work into the back bump of the chain because I personally like how it looks. You can work into the chain however you normally do.
Step 1 Row 1
Begin by yarning over and then inserting the crochet hook into the 3rd chain from the hook.

FPDC Row 1 Step 2
Now Yarn Over and pull through the chain stitch. There will be 3 loops of yarn on the crochet hook at this point.

Row 1 Step 3
Next Yarn Over and pull through 2 of the loops on the crochet hook. There will be 2 loops remaining on the hook at the end of this step.

FPDC Row 1 Step 4
Finally Yarn Over again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the crochet hook. This will complete 1 REGULAR Double Crochet Stitch.

Remaining Stitches for Row 1
Now place 1 REGULAR Double Crochet Stitch in each of the remaining chains across the row.

How to Front Post Double Crochet Row 2
To start the next row, chain 2 and turn your work. Work a REGULAR Double Crochet in the 1st stitch of the row.

Row 2 Step 1 Front Post Double Crochets
Begin by identifying which post you will work the FPDC around.

Step 2 Row 2
Now Yarn Over and then insert the crochet hook into the gap to the immediate right of the post we are working around. The hook should pop out on the back side of the work.

Row 2 Step 3 How to Front Post Double Crochet Stitch
Next angle the crochet hook and have it come back to the front side, popping to the front on the left side of the post we are working around now. The hook is now isolating the post that is being worked around.

Step 4 Row 2
Now Yarn Over and pull the yarn through and behind the post that is being worked around. There will be 3 loops of yarn on the crochet hook at the end of this step.

Row 2 Step 5 How to Front Post Double Crochet
Next Yarn Over and pull through 2 of the loops on the crochet hook. There will be 2 loops of yarn remaining on the hook at the end of this step.

Step 6 Row 2
Finally Yarn Over and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the crochet hook. This completes 1 Front Post Double Crochet Stitch.

Remaining Front Post Double Crochet Stitches
Repeat Steps 1-6 for any remaining Front Post Double Crochets that you would like to complete.
