How to Crochet a Sunflower Granny Square

Materials Needed for a Sunflower Granny Square:
Size H (5.0mm) crochet hook
Medium Weight (Size 4) yarn in 5 Colors
Tapestry or yarn needle
Optional (but recommended) – crochet blocking board
Crochet Stitches Used:
Crochet Magic Circle/Magic Ring (MC/MR)
Half Double Crochet Stitch (HDC)
Double Crochet Two Together (DC2Tog)
To Start the Sunflower Granny Square:
Begin the Granny Square by creating a Magic Circle and chaining 2.
Sunflower Granny Square – Round 1:
Into the magic ring place 15 double crochet stitches.
After that, tighten the magic circle. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the 1st DC.
Then, cut the yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends. This completes Round 1 of the sunflower granny square.
Sunburst Granny Square – Round 2:
Begin by joining Color #2 with a slip stitch to any DC from the previous round (I don’t like to join in the same space that I just left off in the last round). Chain 1.
Next, in the same stitch, place a puff stitch followed by a chain 1.
Now, move to the next stitch and place a puff stitch and chain 1. Repeat 14 more times. There will be a total of 16 puff stitches for this round. (16)
Finally, to close the round, join with a Sl St to the top of the 1st puff stitch. Cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Round 3 – How to Crochet a Sunflower Granny Square:
Now, with color #3, join with a slip stitch to any of the chain 1 spaces from the previous round. Next, chain 2.
DC2Tog into the same space. Chain 2.
Next, in the next chain 1 space, place a cluster stitch and then chain 2.
Now, keep placing one cluster stitch and chain 2 into each chain 1 space from the previous round. There will be a total of 16 cluster stitches (including the first chain 2 and DC2Tog counting as a cluster stitch) and chain 2 spaces for this round.
Finally, join with a slip stitch to the top of the DC2Tog stitch to close the round.
At this time, cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends. This completes Round 3 of the crochet Sunflower Granny Square.
Round 4:
To begin, with the new color of yarn join with a slip stitch to any of the chain 2 spaces from the previous round of crochet. Chain 2.
Now, double crochet into the same chain 2 space.
Next, place a double crochet two together (DC2Tog) into the SAME chain 2 space, then chain 1.
Move to the next chain 2 space and place two DC2Tog and then chain 1.
Continue placing two Double Crochet 2 Together and a chain 1 in EACH chain 2 space around the sunflower.
There will be 16 sets of two DC2Tog and a chain 1 around the crochet sunflower granny in this round.
Finally, to close round 4 of the Sunflower Granny Square, join with a slip stitch to the top of the DC.
Additionally, cut yarn free from the granny square. Fasten off. Weave in the yarn tails. This completes round 4 of the Sunflower Granny Square.
How to Crochet a Sunflower Granny Square – Round 5:
Begin round 5 of the Sunburst Granny Square by joining yarn color #4 with a slip stitch to any of the chain 1 spaces from the previous round. Next, chain 2.
In the same chain 1 space, place 2 double crochet stitches and chain 2.
Stay in the same chain 1 space and place 2 more double crochets and then chain 1. This makes the first corner of the crochet granny square.
Now, in each of the next 3 chain 1 spaces, place 3 half double crochet stitches followed by a chain 1 (there will be 3 sets of HDC + ch 1 to create the first side of the sunburst granny square).
In the next chain 1 space we will create the second corner of the crochet granny square. To do this, place 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC, ch 1 into the SAME chain 1 space.
Round 5 Continued:
Again, in each of the next 3 chain 1 spaces (from the last round of crochet), place 3 half double crochets followed by a chain 1 (there will be 3 sets of 3 HDC + ch 1). This will create the second side of the sunflower granny square.
Move to the next chain 1 space and put the following into the same stitch: 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC, ch 1. This will complete the third corner of the sunburst granny square.
Now it is time to create the third side of the sunflower granny square. In each of the next 3 chain 1 spaces place: 3 HDC and chain 1 (there will be 3 sets of 3 half double crochets and a chain 1).
To create the final (fourth) corner of the crochet granny square, place 2 double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets, chain 1 in the next chain 1 space (from the last round).
Now we are going to create the fourth and final side of the crochet sunflower granny square. In each of the next 3 chain 1 spaces place: 3 half double crochets and chain 1. There will be a total of 3 HDC chain 1 sets for this side.
To close Round 5 of the granny square, join with a slip stitch to the top of the first double crochet stitch.
How to Crochet a Sunflower Granny Square – Round 6:
To start round 6, begin by chaining 1.
Place one half double crochet stitch in each of the next 2 stitches.
Into the corner space, place 2 HDC, chain 2, 2 HDC.
Put one half double crochet stitch into each of the next 2 stitches.
In the next 3 chain 1 spaces (from the last round of crochet), place 3 half double crochet stitches and a chain 1 (there will be 3 sets of 3 HDC + a chain 1).
In the next chain 1 space, place 3 half double crochets. DO NOT CHAIN 1.
Place one HDC in each of the next 2 stitches.
Now, in the corner space, place 2 HDC, chain 2, 2 HDC.
Put 1 half double crochet stitch in EACH of the next 2 stitches.
Round 6 Continued:
In each of the next chain 1 spaces (from the last round), place 3 half double crochet stitches and then chain 1. We are building up the side of the sunflower granny square.
Now, in the next chain 1 space, place 3 half double crochet stitches. DO NOT CHAIN 1.
Place one half double crochet stitch in each of the next 2 stitches.
Now we are working into the corner of the crochet granny square. Into the chain 2 space from the last round place 2 HDC, chain 2, 2 HDC.
Begin working up the third side of the sunburst granny square by placing one half double crochet stitch in each of the next 2 stitches.
For each of the next 3 chain 1 spaces we will put 3 half double crochet stitches and a chain 1 into each space.
Round 6 Cont.
Go to the next chain 1 space and place 3 half double crochet stitches.
Put one half double crochet stitch in each of the next 2 stitches.
To create the fourth corner for Round 6 of the Sunflower Granny Square, place 2 HDC, chain 2, 2 HDC in the chain 2 space from Round 5.
Now we are working on the fourth and final side of the sunburst granny square. Begin by placing one half double crochet stitch in each of the next two stitches.
In each of the next 3 chain 1 spaces (from the previous round of crochet), place 3 HDC and a chain 1.
For the last chain 1 space of this round place 3 half double crochet stitches in it.
To close the round and finish the sunflower crochet granny square, join with a slip stitch to the top of the first HDC of this round.
Cut the yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in the yarn tails.

Join with a sl st to the top of the DC2Tog. Cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Fourth Round:
Begin by joining color #4 with a slip stitch to any of the chain 2 spaces. Chain 2. DC in the same space. DC2Tog into the same chain 2 space. (In the next chain 2 space place 2 DC2Tog and then chain 1) 15xs. There will be a total of 16 DC2Tog sets + chain 1 around the circle (including the first chain 2 and DC). Join with a sl st to the top of the DC. Cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Round 5:
With color #5 join with a slip stitch to any of the chain 1 spaces from the last round. Chain 2. Place 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC, ch 1 in the same chain 1 space. (In EACH of the next 3 chain 1 spaces, from the last round, place 3 HDC and a chain 1. Now, in the next chain 1 space, from the last round, place 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC, ch 1) 3xs. In each of the next 3 chain 1 spaces, from the last round, place 3 HDC and a chain 1. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the 1st DC. This completes Round 5, but DO NOT cut the yarn at this point.
Sixth Round:
Now, chain 1. Place one HDC in each of the next 2 stitches. In the corner (chain 2) space, place 2 HDC, ch 2, 2 HDC. (Place one HDC in each of the next 2 stitches. In each of the next chain 1 spaces, from the previous round, place 3 HDC and chain 1. Moving to the next chain 1 space, place 3 HDC only. Place one HDC in each of the next 2 stitches.
In the corner (chain 2) space, place 2 HDC, ch 2, 2 HDC) 3xs. In each of the next chain 1 spaces, from the previous round, place 3 HDC and chain 1. Moving to the next chain 1 space, place 3 HDC only.
