The Double Crochet Stitch is one of the first crochet stitches that one must learn when learning to crochet. This crochet stitch is abbreviated DC when looking at crochet patterns. It is not a difficult stitch to master. If you are ready to learn how to double crochet stitch, let’s grab a hook and some yarn and get crocheting!

Materials Needed:

Any size crochet hook

Yarn of choice

Crochet Stitches Referenced:

Crochet Chain Stitch (Ch)

Foundation Double Crochet Stitch (FDC) This is an optional way to start the Double Crochet Stitch. If using this method, it would count as a row of chains plus a first row of DC.

How to Start:

Begin by chaining any number of chains. There are no multiples for this crochet stitch. You can crochet any number of chains.

Step One:

Now, work the first Double Crochet Stitch into the third chain from the crochet hook.

After locating the third chain from the hook, yarn over and insert the crochet hook into that third chain.

How to Double Crochet Stitch – Step Two:

Now, yarn over and pull through the chain stitch. There will be 3 loops on the crochet hook at this point.

Step 3:

Next, yarn over again and pull through TWO of the loops on the crochet hook. There will be 2 loops of yarn left on the hook at the end of this step.

Final Step:

Finally, yarn over and pull through both loops on the crochet hook. This completes the first double crochet stitch.

Second DC – Step 1:

Now, to start a second DC for this row, yarn over. Insert the hook into the next chain.

Step 2 – Second Double Crochet Stitch:

Next, yarn over and pull through the chain stitch.

2nd DC – Step 3:

Now, yarn over and pull through 2 loops of yarn on the hook.

Step 4:

Finally, yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the crochet hook. This completes the second double crochet stitch. Repeat across the chain.

Second Row of Double Crochet Stitches – Start:

Begin a second row of DC (and any other additional rows of DC) by chaining 2 and then turning.

Additional Rows of Double Crochet – Step 2:

Now, yarn over and insert the hook into the first stitch.

Step 3 – Additional Rows:

Next, yarn over and pull through the stitch. There will be 3 loops of yarn on the hook at this point.

Additional Rows of DC – Step 4:

Now, yarn over and pull through 2 loops of yarn on the hook. There will be 2 loops left on the crochet hook.

Last Step:

Finally, Yarn Over and pull through both loops. This completes a DC.

Repeat across the row in the same manner.

Placement of the Last Double Crochet Stitch of the Row:

Now, knowing where to place the last DC of the row is key to straight edges. See the pictures below for stitch placement.

Counting the Double Crochet Stitch:

Finally, when counting the DC, each “V” on the top of the stitch counts as one DC.
