How to Front Loop Double Crochet Stitch

Materials Needed:

Any size crochet hook (I used a size J (6.0mm) crochet hook for this tutorial)

Yarn of your choice (I used a medium weight size 4 yarn for this tutorial)

How to Start the Front Loop Double Crochet Stitch:

Begin by chaining any number. After chaining, work a row of REGULAR double crochet stitches into the chain. Alternatively, this could also be started with a row of Foundation Double Crochet stitches as well. Either way, the Front Loop Double Crochet Stitch needs to be worked into a previous row of crochet stitches.

Also, the key to this crochet stitch is knowing what is the front loop and what is the back loop of the previous row of stitching. The front loop is ALWAYS the loop that is closest to the crocheter. The loops (both front and back) make up the “v” on the top of the crochet stitches.

Step 1:

Now, to start a row of FLDC, chain 2 and turn.

FLDC – Step 2:

Next, yarn over and insert the hook, picking up the front loop of the previous row of stitching only. Do this by inserting the hook from below the top of the stitch and up into the middle of the stitch. See pictures below for details.

Step 3:

Now, Yarn Over again and pull through the stitch. This pull through is a downward motion. There will be 3 loops of yarn on the crochet hook at the end of this step.

Front Loop Double Crochet Stitch – Step 4:

Next, yarn over again and pull through TWO of the loops that are on the crochet hook. There will be 2 loops of yarn left on the crochet hook at the end of this step.

Step 5:

Now, yarn over one more time and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the crochet hook. This completes one FLDC stitch. There will be one loop of yarn left on the hook at the end of this step.

Remaining Stitches Row 1:

Finally, continue the same steps for the remaining FLDCs for this row. The only tricky spot might be at the end of the row. See the picture below for the proper placement of the last 2 front loop double crochet stitches for this row.

Second Row of Front Loop Half Double Crochet Stitches:

Next, to start a second row of FLDC, begin by chaining 2 and turning. Work the 1st FLDC into the same stitch. Create the stitches in the same manner.

How to Count the Front Loop Double Crochet Stitch:

Now, when counting the front loop double crochet stitch, count it in the exact same way as other crochet stitches. Each “v” on the top of the crochet stitch counts as one FLDC.

First, the front loop double crochet stitch needs to be worked into a row of previous crochet stitches. Keep in mind that the front loop of the stitch is located on the top of the previous round of crochet stitches. The front loop is the loop that is closest to the crocheter. Work into the front loop only.

Now, to start a row of FLDC, begin by chaining 2 and turning. Work into the front loop only of the first stitch. Yarn over. Insert the hook into the front loop only.

Next, yarn over again and pull through the front loop space (this is a downward pull through motion). There will be 3 loops of yarn on the crochet hook at this point.

Now, yarn over again and pull through 2 loops of yarn on the hook. There are 2 loops of yarn left on the crochet hook now.

Finally, yarn over once again and pull through the remaining 2 loops on the crochet hook. Now there is 1 loop of yarn left on the hook and this is one front loop double crochet stitch.
