What is the Single Crochet Stitch?
The single crochet stitch is one of the simplest and most fundamental stitches in crochet, making it a perfect starting point for beginners. It creates a dense, sturdy fabric with very little stretch, which makes it ideal for projects like amigurumi, dishcloths, bags, and anything that needs structure. Because it’s easy to learn and incredibly versatile, the single crochet is often one of the first stitches new crocheters master, and one you’ll return to again and again as you grow your skills.
Abbreviation and Crochet Chart Symbol
The Single Crochet Stitch is abbreviated SC in many crochet patterns.
If using a crochet chart, the chart symbol looks like this:

Materials Needed for the Single Crochet Stitch Tutorial:
Yarn of choice (I used Red Heart Soft Yarn in the color Sea Foam. It is a size 4 medium weight yarn)
Crochet hook of choice (I used a Clover Soft Touch Crochet hook size J 6.0mm)
Scissors
Stitch Count and Stitch Multiples for the SC:
To begin, there is NO MULTIPLE for the single crochet stitch. Simply chain as many as you would like for your crochet project.

How to Single Crochet Step One:
Now when starting with a chain, the first single crochet stitch goes into the SECOND chain from the hook.

Step Two:
Now insert the crochet hook into the second chain. Do this WITHOUT yarning over.
You can choose how to work into the chain. You can check you my video about the 3 Different Ways to Work Into a Chain that shows how to work into the chain.
Working Into the Chain Option #1
To begin, the first way you can work into a chain by placing 1 of the 3 parts of the chain on the top of the crochet hook.

Option #2:
Now some patterns have 2 legs (or parts of the chain) on the top side of the hook. Pay attention to what the pattern specifies.

Working Into the Chain Option #3:
Finally, you could work into the back bump of the chain (that’s what I did in this tutorial).

Inserting the Crochet Hook:
Now this is what is looks like after inserting the crochet hook into the chain stitch.

How to Single Crochet Step Three:
Now yarn over by slightly lifting the crochet hook to catch the yarn. Pull through the chain stitch. There will be 2 loops of yarn on the crochet hook at the completion of this step.

Step Four:
Next yarn over again and then pull through both loops on the crochet hook. There will be 1 loop of yarn remaining on the crochet hook. THIS IS ONE COMPLETED SINGLE CROCHET STITCH!

Remaining Stitches of the Row:
Now for the remainder of the crochet stitches for Row 1, repeat the process across the chain.

How to Single Crochet the Second Row and Beyond:
First start a new row of single crochet stitches by chaining 1 and turning your work.

Now for the second (and rows beyond) row of single crochet, place one single crochet in each of the stitches from the previous row. See the picture below for where to work the single crochet stitches in additional rows of crochet.

Additional Rows Step 2:
First place the crochet hook in the first space/stitch from the hook. Make sure to pick up both the front and the back loop of the top of the previous row’s stitch when inserting the crochet hook (see the second picture below).

Step 3:
Now yarn over and pull through the stitch. There will be 2 loops of yarn on the crochet hook at the end of this step.

Additional Rows of Single Crochet Step Four:
Next yarn over again and pull through both loops of yarn on the crochet hook. There will be 1 loop of yarn remaining on the crochet hook at the end of this step. THIS COMPLETES 1 SINGLE CROCHET STITCH!

Last Single Crochet Stitch of the Row:
Now where to place the final single crochet stitch of the row is sometimes hard to see. It slants a little, so check out the pictures below if you struggle to find where to place that stitch!

How to Count the Single Crochet Stitch:
Finally, to count the single crochet stitch, each “V” on the top of the stitch counts as one stitch.
