Simple Granny Square Pattern and Tutorial
Looking for a simple granny square pattern and tutorial that doesn’t look like all of the rest of them? Our Flower Granny Square is the perfect fit! It is also a great scrap yarn project. Four different colors of yarn create a pretty crochet floral themed granny square. Any color combination would be fun on this crochet granny square. We used medium weight (size 4) yarn for this square and a size G (4.0mm) crochet hook. Ready to create the Flower Granny Square? Let’s grab a hook and some yarn and get crocheting!
Materials Needed:
Medium weight (size 4) yarn in 4 different colors (Color #1, Color #2, Color #3, & Color #4)
Size G (4.0mm) crochet hook
Yarn Needle
Blocking board (if desired to block your simple granny squares)
Crochet Stitches Used:
Magic Circle (MC)
Single Crochet (SC)
Double Crochet (DC)
Treble Crochet (TR)
Slip Stitch (Sl St)
Chain Stitch (Ch)
Double Crochet 2 Together (DC 2 tog)
Double Crochet Cluster Stitch
Round 1 – Simple Granny Square:
Begin with a Magic Circle and chain 2.
Into the Magic Circle place 15 Double Crochets.
Tighten the Magic Circle.
Slip Stitch to the top of the 1st DC. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Round 2 – Flower Crochet Granny Square:
With Color #2, slip stitch to any stitch from the previous round. Chain 2.
DC into the same stitch. Chain 2.
DC 2 tog in the next stitch. Ch 1.
In the next stitch, DC 2 Tog and Ch 2.
Move to the next stitch and DC 2 Tog, Ch 1.
Now, DC 2 Tog and Ch 2 in the next stitch.
In the next stitch, DC 2 Tog and Ch 1.
Next, place DC 2 Tog and Ch 2 in the next stitch.
Now, DC 2 Tog and Ch 1 in the next stitch.
Continued Round 2:
In the next stitch, DC 2 Tog, Ch 2.
Move to the next stitch and DC 2 Tog and Ch 1.
Next, DC 2 Tog and Ch 2 in the next stitch.
Move to the next stitch and DC 2 Tog and Ch 1.
In the next stitch, DC 2 Tog, Ch 2.
Next, DC 2 Tog and chain 1 in the next stitch.
In the next stitch, DC 2 Tog and Ch 2.
Move to the next stitch and DC 2 Tog and Ch 1.
Close round one of the simple granny square by joining with a slip stitch to the top of the 1st DC. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Simple Granny Square – Round 3:
With the next color (I used color #3 here), slip stitch to any of the chain 1 spaces from the previous round. Ch 1.
Single Crochet stitch into the same space.
Chain 2.
Into the next chain 2 space, Double Crochet Cluster Stitch, then chain 1.
In the same stitch, Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and then chain 2. We have now created the first petal of our flower in this simple granny square.
Single Crochet stitch into the next chain 1 space. Then Ch 2.
Move to the next chain 2 space and place a Double Crochet Cluster stitch and then chain 1.
Now, in the same Ch 2 space, place another Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and chain 2. This has made the second flower petal in our flower granny square.
In the next chain 1 space, place a SC and Chain 2.
Move to the next chain 2 space and place a Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and Ch 1.
In the same chain 2 space, place another Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and then chain 2.
Move to the next chain 1 space and place a SC and Ch 2. This creates the 3rd petal of our flower in the simple granny square.
Continued Round 3:
Into the next chain 2 space put a Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and Ch 1.
Stay in the same chain 2 space and place another Double Crochet Cluster stitch and then chain 2. This creates the 4th petal in the flower for our crochet granny square.
In the next chain 1 space, place a SC and Ch 2.
Go to the next chain 2 space and place a Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and chain 1.
In the same chain 2 space place another Double Crochet Cluster and chain 2. Now we have completed the 5th flower petal for the crochet flower granny square.
Move to the next chain 1 space and place a single crochet stitch and chain 2.
Into the next chain 2 space, place a Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and chain 1.
Stay in the same Ch 2 space and place another Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and chain 2. This completes the 6th petal for the crochet flower granny square.
Go to the next chain 1 space place a SC and Chain 2.
Into the next chain 2 space place a Double Crochet Cluster stitch and chain 1.
Stay in the same chain 2 space place another Double Crochet Cluster stitch and chain 2. This is a 7th petal in the crochet flower for the simple granny square.
Into the last Ch 1 space place a SC and then Chain 2.
Move to the last Chain 2 space and place a Double Crochet Cluster Stitch and Ch 1.
Stay in the same Ch 2 space and place another Double Crochet Cluster stitch and chain 2. This completes the eighth and final petal of our flower in the crochet flower granny square.
Finishing Round 3:
To finish Round 3, join with a slip stitch to the top of the 1st single crochet stitch. Clip yarn free. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Completed Round 3:
Round 4 – Simple Crochet Granny Square:
With the new Yarn Color (Color #1) in my square, slip stitch to any of the SC from the previous round. Chain 2.
Into the same SC place a DC, TR, Ch 2, TR, DC. This has created the first corner of our simple granny square.
Chain 4, then HDC in the next SC (from the previous round).
Now, chain 4 to complete side 1 of the crochet granny square.
Into the next SC, place: DC, TR, Ch 2, TR, DC. This makes the second corner of the crochet flower granny square.
Next, chain 4, HDC into the next single crochet, chain 4. This makes the second side of the crochet granny square.
Move to the next SC from the previous round and place the following crochet stitches: DC, TR, Ch 2, TR, DC. This creates the third corner of the simple granny square.
Next, chain 4, HDC in the next SC, chain 4 to create the third side of the crochet flower granny square.
Now we will create the final corner of the crochet granny square by placing the following into the next SC: DC, TR, Ch 2, TR, DC.
Finally, chain 4, HDC, chain 4 to complete the final side of the crochet flower granny square.
To close the round, join with a slip stitch to the top of the first DC.
This is the completed Round 4.
Simple Granny Square – Round 5:
With Color #4 (white in my simple granny square), slip stitch to any of the corner chain 2 spaces. Chain 2.
In the same chain 2 space place 2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC. This adds to the corner for the simple granny square.
Place one DC in each of the next 2 stitches (these are the TR and DC from the previous round).
Into the next chain 4 space place 4 double crochets.
Place 4 double crochet stitches into the next chain 4 space.
Now put one DC in each of the next 2 stitches. These are the DC and the TR from the last round.
Into the chain 2 corner space place 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC. Again, this adds to the corner for the crochet flower granny.
Next, put one double crochet stitch into each of the next two stitches (the TR and DC from the last round).
Into the next chain 4 space place 4 DC.
Go to the next chain 4 space and place 4 DC into that space.
Put one Double Crochet stitch into each of the next 2 stitches (the DC and the TR from the previous round).
In the corner of the crochet granny square (the chain 2 space), place 2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC.
Continued Round 5:
Place one Double Crochet stitch in each of the next 2 stitches (the TR and the DC from the last round of crochet).
Into the next chain 4 space place 4 double crochet stitches.
Put 4 double crochet stitches into the next chain 4 space.
Into the next two crochet stitches place a double crochet stitch. (These are the DC and TR from the last round of crochet).
Place 2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC in the corner (chain 2) space. This is the fourth corner of the simple granny square.
In the next 2 stitches (the treble crochet stitch and the double crochet stitch from the last round) place one double crochet stitch.
Put 4 double crochets in the chain 4 space.
Move to the next chain 4 space and place four more double crochet stitches in that space.
In the next 2 crochet stitches, place a double crochet in each. (These are the double crochet and treble crochet stitches from the last round)
To close the round and finish the crochet flower granny square, join with a slip stitch to the top of the first double crochet stitch. Cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Finishing Up the Simple Granny Square:
I have found that this crochet granny square usually needs to be blocked to get the ideal shape. Is it completely necessary? No, but it does improve the look of the block.

Round One:

With the new color (Color #2 in my block example), join with a slip stitch to any of the DCs from the previous round. DC into the same stitch. Ch 2. (DC 2 Tog, Ch 1, DC 2 Tog, Ch 2) 7xs. DC 2 Tog, Ch 1. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the 1st DC. Cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Round Three:
Bring in the new yarn color (Color #3 in my block example) and join with a slip stitch to any of the chain 1 spaces. Ch. 1. SC into the same space. Ch 2. (DC Cluster in the next ch 2 space, ch 1, DC Cluster in the same space, ch 2. SC in the next ch 1 space, ch 2) 7xs. DC Cluster in the last ch 2 space, ch 1, DC Cluster in the same space, ch 2. Join with a Sl St to the top of the SC. Cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Fourth Round:
For the 4th round of the crochet flower granny square, bring in the new yarn color (Color #1 in my block example) and Sl St to any of the SC from the last round. Ch 2. In the same stitch place: DC, TR, Ch 2, TR, DC. [Ch 4, HDC in the next SC from the last round, Ch 4, in the next SC (from the previous round) place: DC, TR, Ch 2, TR, DC] 3xs. Ch 4, HDC in the next SC (from the previous round), Ch 4. Join with a Sl St to the first DC. Cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Final Round (Round 5):
With color #4 (white in my block example), Sl St to any of the Ch 2 spaces from the last round. Ch. 2. Into the same Ch 2 space place: 2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC. Put one DC in each of the next 2 stitches (the TR and DC from the last round). [Place 4 DC in the Ch 4 space. Skip the HDC, place 4 DC in the next Ch 4 space. In the next Ch 2 space place: 2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC. Now, DC in each of the next 2 stitches] 4xs. Join with a Sl St to the 1st DC. Cut yarn free. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
