How to Single Crochet Stitch
The single crochet stitch is one of the foundation crochet stitches. Mastering this stitch can help one become successful with the numerous other crochet stitches. After learning how to hold the hook and yarn, how to create good tension when crocheting, and how to chain stitch, the single crochet was the first official stitch that I mastered when learning how to crochet. I am going to share a written and photo tutorial for the single crochet stitch, as well as a link to my YouTube video on how to single crochet stitch! Let’s learn together today!
Abbreviation and Crochet Chart Symbol:
The Single Crochet Stitch is abbreviated SC in many crochet patterns.
If using a crochet chart, the chart symbol looks like this:
How to Single Crochet – Step One:
When starting with a chain, the first single crochet stitch goes into the SECOND chain from the hook.
Step Two:
Insert the crochet hook into the second chain. Most patterns have 1 leg of the chain on the top of the hook.
Some patterns have 2 legs on the top side of the hook. Pay attention to what the pattern specifies.
How to Single Crochet – Step Three:
Yarn over.
Step Four:
Pull the yarn through the chain space. Now there are 2 loops on the hook.
Step Five:
Yarn over again.
How to Single Crochet – Step Six:
Pull the hook (and yarn from the yarn over) through the two loops on the hook. There should now be 1 loop on the hook. That completes one single crochet!
How to Single Crochet – Second Row and Beyond:
For the second (and rows beyond) row of single crochet, place one single crochet in each of the stitches from the previous row.
When going to the second (and additional rows), the first step is to either turn and chain 1, or to chain 1 and then turn. Follow the pattern directions.
Next Step:
Place the hook in the first space/stitch from the hook. Make sure to get both the front and the back loop of the previous row’s stitch on the hook (see the second picture below).
Additional Rows – Step Three:
Yarn over.
Additional Rows – Step Four:
Pull the hook through the stitch space (taking the yarn over with the hook).
Two loops will remain on the hook. Yarn over again.
Additional Rows – Step Five:
Pull the yarn over through the two loops that are on the hook. There should be one loop on the hook after this move. That completes ONE single crochet. Repeat as indicated by the pattern.
