How to Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch

Yum

The Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch is probably one of my most-used crochet stitches. I love the more dense fabric this creates for crochet projects, and it is really easy to complete. If you can half double crochet (HDC), you can easily crochet this stitch! The difference between the 2 stitches is simply where you insert the crochet hook when you go into the previous row of stitching. This crochet stitch is also known as the BELOW THE BAR HALF DOUBLE CROCHET STITCH. This photo tutorial (and included video tutorial) will show you exactly where to place the crochet hook and how to complete this stitch. Let’s grab a hook and some yarn and get crocheting!

Why You’ll Love Using the Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch

The Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch is a fantastic choice when you want to add bold texture and visual interest without complicated stitch work. Because the stitch is worked deeper into the row below, it creates a slightly elongated look with beautiful dimension, making it perfect for projects like headbands, scarves, cowls, blankets, and even textured sweaters. It’s especially great for makers who love simple, repetitive stitches but still want their finished piece to stand out. If you’re looking for a stitch that works up quickly, feels rhythmic and relaxing, and adds a subtle “wow” factor to your crochet, the Deep HDC is a wonderful option to add to your go to stitch collection.

Materials Needed

Crochet hook (I used a J 6.0mm for this tutorial)

Any weight yarn (I used a medium weight yarn)

Scissors

Yarn needle

To Start the Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch

This stitch needs to be worked into a previous row of half double crochet stitches. There are a couple of options:

1.) Start with a CHAIN, then place a row of HALF DOUBLE CROCHET stitches.

2.) Begin with a row of FOUNDATION HALF DOUBLE CROCHET stitches.

There is no multiple for this stitch. You can begin with any number of crochet stitches to complete it.

Step 3:

The only difference between a Deep HDC and a regular Half Double Crochet stitch happens at this point. For the Deep HDC, insert the hook below the bar of the previous row’s HDC. See the picture below.

Written Instructions Only

Begin by chaining any number of chains that you would like, OR Foundation Half Double Crochet as many as you would like (if you choose this option, skip to Row 2).

Row 1

Now begin by working into the 2nd chain from the crochet hook. Into the 2nd chain from the hook work one Half Double Crochet Stitch. Place 1 HDC in each chain across.

Row 2

Next for this row of crochet start by chaining 1 and turning your work. Into the 1st stitch work a Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch. To do this, Yarn Over, insert the crochet hook BELOW the horizontal bar that is at the bottom of the space you normally work a HDC into (confused? See pictures above!). YO pull through the space (now there are 3 loops of yarn on the hook). Yarn Over and pull through all 3 loops on the crochet hook. This completes 1 Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch.

Continue working Deep HDC in the same manner across the row!

Remaining Rows

Keep repeating Row 2 for the remainder of your crochet project using the Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch!

And that’s How to Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch! I love how this crochet stitch gives a little different look to my crochet projects. It creates a little thicker fabric once you are done crocheting and it adds lovely, textured detail to any crochet project! I love this crochet stitch. I hope you found this tutorial helpful! Have a blessed day!
