The Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch is probably one of my most-used crochet stitches. I love the more dense fabric this creates for crochet projects, and it is really easy to complete. If you can half double crochet (HDC), you can Deep Half Double Crochet. The difference between the 2 stitches is simply where you insert the crochet hook when you go into the previous row of stitching. This crochet stitch is also known as the BELOW THE BAR HALF DOUBLE CROCHET STITCH. This photo tutorial (and included video tutorial) will show you exactly where to place the crochet hook and how to complete this stitch. Let’s grab a hook and some yarn and get crocheting!

Materials Needed:

-Any size crochet hook (I used a J 6.0mm for this tutorial)

-Any weight yarn (I used a medium weight yarn)

To Start the Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch:

This stitch needs to be worked into a previous row of half double crochet stitches. There are a couple of options:

1.) Start with a CHAIN, then place a row of HALF DOUBLE CROCHET stitches.

2.) Begin with a row of FOUNDATION HALF DOUBLE CROCHET stitches.

There is no multiple for this stitch. You can begin with any number of crochet stitches to complete it.

The only difference between a Deep HDC and a regular Half Double Crochet stitch happens at this point. For the Deep HDC, insert the hook below the bar of the previous row’s HDC. See the picture below.
