How to Double Crochet Two Together (DC2Tog)
Learning how to Double Crochet Two Together is an essential skill for crocheters. The DC2Tog crochet stitch can be used in a couple of different ways. First, it can be used as a more textured crochet stitch that adds interest to crochet projects. Second, it can also be used as a decrease crochet stitch when you need to reduce the number of stitches in a row of crochet. There is only a slight difference between the two versions, and we will teach you both here today. So if you are ready to learn how to double crochet two together (DC2Tog), let’s grab a hook and some yarn and get crocheting!
Materials Needed:
Any size crochet hook (for this tutorial I used a size J 6.0mm crochet hook)
Any weight yarn (for this tutorial I used a medium weight size 4 yarn)
Crochet Terms and Crochet Abbreviations Used:
Yarn Over (YO)
Starting the Double Crochet Two Together (Used as One Textured Stitch):
Start a row of crochet cluster stitches by chaining 2 and turning.
Step One – DC2Tog, No Decrease:
Begin by Yarning Over and inserting the hook into the next stitch.
Step Two:
YO and pull through the stitch.
How to Double Crochet Two Together – Step 3:
Now, YO and pull through 2 loops on the hook. There will be 2 loops remaining on the hook after this step.
Step 4:
Yarn Over again and insert the hook into the SAME stitch.
How to DC2Tog – Step 5:
Next, YO and pull through the stitch. There will be 4 loops on the hook at this point.
Step 6:
YO and pull through 2 loops on the hook. There will be 3 loops on the hook. At this point you can see the partial double crochets that become part of the double crochet two together stitch.
How to DC2Tog- Step 7:
For the final step of the double crochet 2 together stitch, YO and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.
Remember, a double crochet two together stitch (DC2Tog) completed this way is NOT a decrease. It also counts as one crochet stitch.
How to DC2Tog Decrease Crochet Stitch – Step 1:
For a decrease crochet stitch using the double crochet 2 together stitch, begin by yarning over and inserting the hook into the next stitch to be crocheted.
Step 2 – Crochet Decrease Stitch:
Now, yarn over and pull through the stitch. There will be 3 loops on the crochet hook at this point.
Decrease Double Crochet Two Together – Step 3:
Next, YO and pull through 2 of the loops on the crochet hook.
Step 4:
Yarn over again and insert the hook into the NEXT stitch.
DC2Tog – Step 5:
Now, YO and pull through the stitch. There will be 4 loops on the crochet hook now.
Step 6:
Next, Yarn Over and pull through 2 of the loops on the crochet hook. There are 3 yarn loops on the crochet hook at this point.
Decrease Double Crochet Two Together – Step 7:
Finally, YO and pull through all 3 loops on the crochet hook. There is now 1 loop on the hook and we have completed one double crochet 2 together stitch.
This completes a decrease crochet stitch using the double crochet 2 together (DC2Tog).
Using the Double Crochet Two Together this way reduces the stitch count for the row by 1 crochet stitch.
Double Crochet Two Together Two Different Ways:
The DC2Tog can be made to count as one textured crochet stitch that keeps the stitch count for the row the same:
Or:
It can be used as a decrease crochet stitch that reduces the stitch count for the row by 1 stitch.

Next, YO and pull through 2 of the loops on the hook. 2 loops remain on the hook.
Yarn Over and insert the hook into the SAME crochet stitch.
Now, YO and pull through the crochet stitch. There will be 4 loops on the hook at this point.
Next, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the crochet hook. There are 3 loops left on the hook now.
Finally, pull through all 3 loops on the hook. This completes one double crochet two together stitch. Again, this does not reduce the number of crochet stitches for the row and it counts as one crochet stitch.
