How to Crochet a Blanket Border Popcorn Edging
One of my favorite crochet projects is a crochet blanket. My favorite thing to do is add a crochet blanket border that adds interest and detail to the blanket. This tutorial will show how to add a crochet blanket border to any crochet blanket. This crochet edging is a fun popcorn or pom pom detail that brings crochet blankets fun and creativity. Ready to crochet it? Let’s grab a hook and some yarn and get crocheting!

Materials Needed for the Crochet Blanket Border:
A project to place this crochet edging on
Crochet hook to match your project (I used a size J 6.0mm crochet hook)
Yarn weight to match your project (I used a medium weight size 4 yarn)
Yarn needle
Scissors
Crochet Stitches Used:
Double Crochet 4 Together (DC4Tog) = Yarn Over, insert the hook into the designated stitch. YO, pull through the stitch. Now, YO, pull through 2 loops (1st partial DC). Yarn Over, insert the hook into the same stitch. YO pull through the stitch. Now, YO, pull through 2 loops (2nd partial DC). Yarn Over, insert the hook into the same stitch. YO, pull through the stitch. Now, YO, pull through 2 loops (3rd partial DC). YO, insert the hook into the same stitch. Yarn Over, pull through the stitch. Now YO, pull through 2 loops (4th partial DC). YO and pull through all of the loops on the hook.
Crochet Border Stitch Count Math:
This border has a stitch count in multiples of 6.
I would place at least one single crochet stitch at the start of the row and at the end of the row.
Following these rules, my crochet blanket project had 143 stitches along the edge I wanted to place this crochet edging on.
I was able to fit 23 full sets of pom pom “v”s across the bottom.
That left me with 5 stitches left over. I put 1 SC at the start of my row.
For my count, I had 4 stitches left at the end of the border. This allowed me to have one more pom pom “v”. The only difference is that this “v” only has a stitch count of 4 instead of 6. This allows me to end with the “v” and then a SC.
Crochet Blanket Border – Row 1:
Join with your border color yarn. Chain 1 and turn. Place 1 SC in each stitch across.
Row 2:
Chain 1, turn. Place on SC in each stitch across.
Row 3 – Step One:
Now, I chain 1 and turn.
Step 2 – Crochet Blanket Border
Again for my stitch count I place a singular SC in the first stitch of this row. I would recommend at least one SC to start your row.
Row 3 – Step 3:
After placing the correct number of single crochets for your project, chain 9.
Step 4 – Crochet Blanket Edging:
Now, we will be working our first stitches into the 4th chain from the crochet hook.
After locating the 4th chain, work a double crochet into it.
Row 3 – Step 5:
Now we will begin working a double crochet 4 together (DC4Tog) into the same stitch that we just worked the DC into. To do this, begin by yarning over.
After yarning over, insert the crochet hook into the SAME chain stitch that we worked the DC into.
Next, yarn over again and pull through the stitch.
Step 6 – Crochet Blanket Border:
Now, keep in mind that this step is still creating the DC4Tog. With that in mind, yarn over again and pull through 2 of the loops that are on the crochet hook.
After pulling through the 2 loops there will be 2 loops of yarn left on the crochet hook.
Next, yarn over again and insert the hook back into the SAME chain stitch space that we have been working into for the previous steps.
Continuing Step 6:
Now, yarn over and pull through the stitch.
Again, yarn over one more time and pull through 2 loops of yarn on the crochet hook.
Now, there will be 3 loops of yarn on the hook at this point.
Step 7 – Crochet Blanket Border:
Next we will Yarn Over and then insert the crochet hook into the same chain stitch that we have been working in.
Again, yarn over and pull through the stitch.
Next, yarn over again and pull through 2 of the loops on the crochet hook.
Popcorn Edging Step 8:
Now, yarn over and insert the crochet hook yet again into the same chain space.
Next, yarn over and pull through the chain stitch.
Again, yarn over and pull through TWO loops of yarn on the crochet hook.
Final Step of the DC4Tog:
Finally, to finish the Double Crochet 4 Together stitch, yarn over and pull through all of the loops on the crochet hook.
Creating the Popcorn or Pom Pom:
Now, to finish creating the popcorn piece we are going to slip stitch to close it. We do this by coming from behind the work into the space between the skipped 4 chains and the first DC.
Next, insert the crochet hook into the same chain space that we worked the DC and DC4Tog into.
Now, slip stitch these 2 spaces together by yarning over and pulling through both spaces.
Step 9 – Crochet Blanket Border:
After creating the popcorn piece, chain 5.
Edging Step 10:
Now that we have chained 5 we then skip 3 stitches. Into the 4th stitch we place a SC.
Step 11 – Crochet Blanket Border:
After the skipped 3 stitches we work 3 single crochets. This completes one of the popcorn “v” stitches for the border.
Again, I was able to fit 33 full sets of these across my blanket.
Ending the Crochet Blanket Edging:
Now, remember that my stitch count left me with 4 stitches at the end of my edge (after completing 33 complete popcorn “v”s).
Finally, I am able to complete a partial “v” popcorn with this stitch count. I do this by chaining 9 after the 33rd popcorn “v.”
Now, make the popcorn/pompom like we did for the regular popcorn “v” stitches.
Again chain 5.
Finally, to end the row skip 3 stitches and then place one single crochet stitch in the very last stitch of the row. You will need to do your math so you end this row with at least one single crochet stitch.
Finished Product:
This is what my edging looked like on my project.

Written Instructions Only:
Row 1: Join with your chosen yarn for the border. Chain 1 and turn. Place one SC in the first stitch and in each stitch across.
Border Row 2: Chain 1, turn. Place one SC in the first stitch and in in each stitch across.
Row 3: After doing the math to determine how many popcorn “v” stitches you can get evenly across the border, chain 1 and turn. Place at least 1 SC in the first stitch (you may need a few more depending on how your math worked out. For my stitch count I only needed 1 SC to start).
After placing the needed number of SC to start, (chain 9. Now, into the 4th chain from the hook work the following: DC & and DC4tog. Then chain 5. Next, skip 3 stitches. Place one SC in each of the next 3 stitches). Repeat as many times as you can across the row.
Make sure that you have at least one single crochet stitch at the end of the row.
And that is How to Crochet a Blanket Border Popcorn Edging. I hope you found this tutorial helpful. Have a blessed day!
