How to Foundation Treble Crochet
Learning how to Foundation Treble Crochet (FTR) is fairly easy. The keys to success with the Foundation Treble Crochet stitch is hook placement and tension control. If I can use this stitch instead of chaining and then treble crochet I will! Want to learn how to FTR? Let’s grab a hook and some yarn and get crocheting.
Materials Needed:
Crochet hook of choice
Yarn of choice
To Start the Foundation Treble Crochet Stitch:
Begin by chaining 3.
How to Foundation Treble Crochet – Step 2:
Next, Yarn Over twice.
Insert the hook into the first chain.
I know that my hook is in the correct place if there are 2 “legs” of the chain on the top of the hook.
Step 3:
Next, Yarn Over and pull back through the chain. There will be 4 loops on the hook at the end of this step.
Make sure to keep the loop that we just created (the one closest to the nook of the hook) loose. This keeps your FTR from curving.
How to Foundation Treble Crochet – Step 4:
Yarn Over and pull through 1 loop. Now we have 4 loops on the hook at the end of this step.
This creates the “foundation” part of the Foundation Treble Crochet.
Step 5:
YO and pull through 2 loops. There are 3 loops left on the hook at the end of this step.
Foundation Treble Crochet – Step 6:
Next, Yarn Over, pull through 2 loops. There are 2 loops left on the hook at the end of this step.
Step 7:
YO, pull through both loops on the hook. There is 1 loop left on the hook at this point. This also makes 1 completed Foundation Treble Crochet stitch.
Additional Foundation Treble Crochets – Step 1:
Begin by yarning over 2 times. Insert the hook in the foundation part of the previous stitch. See the picture for the correct placement of the hook.
The hook is in the correct place if there are only 2 “legs” from the previous stitch on the hook.
Step 2 – Additional FTR:
Next, Yarn over and pull through the stitch. There are 4 loops on the hook at the end of this step.
Remember to keep the loop closest to the hook part of the hook a little looser so that the FTR doesn’t curve.
Additional Foundation Treble Crochets – Step 3:
YO and pull through 1 loop only. There are 4 loops left on the hook at this point.
Step 4:
Next, Yarn Over and pull through 2 loops. There are 3 loops left on the hook at this point.
Step 5:
Now, YO again and pull through 2 loops. There are 2 loops left on the hook.
Final Step:
Yarn over and pull through both remaining loops. There is 1 loop left on the hook at the end of this step. This also completes one Foundation Treble Crochet stitch.
Tips for Working with the FTR:
The first tip is: Work the remaining Foundation Treble Crochets into the space shown in the picture below. Remember, hook placement and tension are keys to success with the foundation chains!
Tip #2 – Know which edge is the top edge of the Foundation Treble Crochet and which edge is the bottom edge of the Foundation Treble Crochet. See the picture below.
When counting the stitches, look for the “v” shapes. Each “v” counts as one stitch.
The 4th Tip is: Know where to place the next row of stitches when using a foundation crochet stitch. I place my hook above the little bar and below the big bar when placing my next row of stitches.
Have fun crocheting the Foundation Treble Crochet! Have a blessed day & happy crocheting!
