How to Marguerite or 5-Spike Star Stitch in Crochet
I love using textured crochet stitches in my crochet projects. They add such a lovely look to the items that I am working on and they are fun to crochet. One of my new favorite crochet stitches is the Marguerite or 5-Spike Star Stitch in crochet. In fact, I am working on a throw pillow that features this stitch now. This stitch has such a lovely look to it. I think I am going to have to use it in more projects in the future! It is not a terribly difficult stitch to use once you get the hang of it. Let’s grab a hook and some yarn and get crocheting!
Materials Needed:
Any size crochet hook
Any weight yarn (I do tend to like how this stitch looks with a little bit thinner yarn – my favorite yarn to use with the Marguerite Stitch in Crochet is Lion Brand Touch of Linen yarn).
Crochet Terms Used:
Stitch Count to Start the Marguerite Stitch:
The Marguerite or 5-Spike Star Stitch in crochet is written as 2 + 1 + 3. What this means is:
-Each Marguerite Stitch needs a multiple of 2 to be completed.
-1 extra stitch is needed for the very first Marguerite Stitch.
-Each row (including the start) needs a chain 3 to start.
To Start:
Begin by chaining however many you need for your project. If we use the example above, I would chain 14 to start.
Step 1:
The first Marguerite or 5-Spike Start Stitch will start in the 2nd chain from the hook and it will be worked over 5 chains.
Yarn Over and insert the hook into the 2nd chain from the hook.
How to Marguerite Stitch – Step 2:
Now, yarn over again. Pull the hook back through the stitch. There will be 3 loops on the hook after this step.
How to 5-Spike Star Stitch – Step 3:
Start this step by yarning over again. Insert the hook into the next chain.
Yarn over again and pull back through the stitch. There will be 5 loops on the crochet hook at the end of this step.
Step 4:
Just like the previous steps, begin step 4 by yarning over and inserting the hook into the next chain.
Yarn Over again. Pull back through the stitch. There will be 7 loops on the hook after this step is complete.
Marguerite Crochet Stitch – Step 5:
For this step, YO, then insert the hook into the next chain.
Yarn Over again and pull back through the stitch. There will be 9 loops on the crochet hook at the end of this step.
Step 6:
Begin by Yarning Over. Insert the hook into the next chain.
YO again and pull back through the stitch. There will be 11 loops on the crochet hook at the end of this step.
Finishing the First Marguerite Stitch – Step 7:
To finish the first Marguerite or 5-Spike Star Stitch, YO and pull through all 11 loops on the crochet hook.
To finish the first Marguerite Stitch, chain 1.
How to Create the 2nd Marguerite Stitch on the Chain:
The second and subsequent Marguerite or 5-Spike Star Stitches on the chain will be worked just a little bit differently.
The remaining Marguerite Stitches are worked into the following 5 spaces: 1.) The eye of the previous stitch. 2.) The top of the last stitch. 3.) The last chain used by the last stitch. 4 & 5.) The next 2 chains from the chain start.
Space 1:
Yarn over. Insert the hook into the eye of the previous Marguerite Stitch.
YO, pull back through the stitch. There will be 3 loops on the hook.
How to Marguerite Stitch – Space 2:
Begin by yarning over. Place the hook in the space indicated in the pictures.
Yarn Over again. Pull back through the stitch. There will be 5 loops on the hook after this step.
Working into Space 3:
Yarn over. Place the hook into the last chain space that was used by the previous Marguerite or 5-Spike Star Stitch.
YO again. Pull back through the stitch.
There will be 7 loops on the hook at this point.
Space 4:
Begin by yarning over. Insert the hook into the next chain.
YO again and pull back through the chain stitch.
There will be 9 loops on the hook now.
Working into Space 5:
Start by yarning over. Insert the hook into the next chain.
YO again and pull back through the chain.
There will be 11 loops on the hook at this point.
Finishing the Next Stitches on the Chain:
Yarn over and pull through all 11 loops on the crochet hook. There will be 1 loop left on the hook at this point.
There will be 1 loop left on the hook at this point.
Chain 1 to finish the stitch.
Repeat these steps for the remaining stitches until you get to the end of the chain.
Row 2 of the Marguerite or 5-Spike Star Stitch:
The second row is a row of single crochets. Begin by chaining 1 and turning.
Place the first single crochet in the “eye” of the last Marguerite Stitch from the previous round.
Place one SC in each stitch across. The stitches from the previous round look like “v”s on the top edge.
Row 3 – First Stitch:
This row begins with a chain 3. Turn. The Marguerite Stitches still need 5 spaces to be worked across. For the first stitch of the row, these spaces will be: 1.) 2nd chain from the hook. 2.) 3rd chain from the hook. 3.) 1st stitch of the row. 4.) 2nd stitch of the row. 5.) 3rd stitch of the row. See the picture below.
The remaining stitches of the row will be worked in the following 5 spaces: 1.) The eye of the previous Marguerite Stitch. 2.) The last loop space in the previous Marguerite Stitch. 3.) The last stitch used by the previous Marguerite Stitch. 4.) The next stitch in line. 5.) The next stitch in line. See the photo below.
And that’s how to complete the Marguerite Stitch or 5-Spike Star Stitch in crochet! I hope you found this tutorial helpful! Have a blessed day!
