Materials Needed:
Any size crochet hook (I used a size “J” 6.0mm hook in this tutorial)
Yarn of choice (I used a medium weight size 4 yarn for this tutorial)
Other Crochet Stitches Used:
Foundation Half Double Crochet Stitch (this is an optional way to start the Paired Half Double Crochet Stitch – you could also just start with a chain stitch and then a row of Half Double Crochet Stitches)
How to Start:
This stitch needs to be worked into a previous row of crochet stitches. This could either be started with any number of chains and then a row of regular half double crochet stitches.
There are no multiples for this stitch. You can crochet any number that you would like.
Step One:
Begin by chaining 1 and turning.
Paired Half Double Crochet Stitch – Step Two:
Now, into the first stitch place a REGULAR half double crochet stitch (HDC).
Step Three:
Next, keep in mind that the PHDC will be worked across 2 crochet stitches. It will be worked into the space the half double crochet stitch was worked into as well as the next stitch.
Now, Yarn Over and insert the hook into the same stitch we worked the regular half double crochet into.
Paired Half Double Crochet – Step Four:
Next, yarn over and pull through the stitch. There will be 3 loops on the hook at the end of this step.
Step Five:
Now, yarn over and insert the hook into the NEXT stitch.
How to Paired Half Double Crochet – Step Six:
Next, yarn over and pull through the stitch. There will be 5 loops on the crochet hook at the end of this step.
Step Seven:
Finally, to complete the 1st PHDC stitch, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops of yarn on the crochet hook.
Second Paired Half Double Crochet Stitch – Step One:
Now, for the second and remaining PHDCs or HDC2Tog for this row, work the PHDC into the stitch we just ended the last PHDC in. You will also work the PHDC into the next stitch.
After locating the stitches that the PHDC will be worked into, begin by yarning over. After YO, insert the hook into the last paired half double crochet.
Step 2 – Second PHDC:
Now yarn over and pull through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the hook.
Second Paired Half Double Crochet Stitch – Step 3:
Next, yarn over again and insert the hook into the next crochet stitch.
Step 4 – Second PHDC:
Now yarn over and pull through the stitch. There will 5 loops of yarn on the crochet hook at this point.
Second Paired Half Double Crochet – Step 5:
Finally, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops of yarn on the crochet hook. This will complete a second PHDC. Complete any remaining PHDC stitches in the exact same manner for the remainder of the row.
Last Paired Half Double Crochet Stitch of Row 1:
Now, Row 1 ends just a little bit different than rows 2-end of the project. We end ROW 1 with a PHDC. Work it just as you did the previous PHDC crochet stitches. Rows 2 to the end of the project will end a little differently.
How to PHDC – Row 2 (and beyond):
First, begin by chaining 1 and then turning. Work a regular HALF DOUBLE CROCHET stitch into the first stitch.
Where to Work the Paired Half Double Crochet Stitches into Row 2 and Beyond:
Now, for the PHDCs for Row 2 (and beyond), work them just as you did for Row 1. The method is the same. Just make sure you work the first part of the PHDC stitch into the previous stitch and then the second part into the next stitch.
Last PHDC of Row 2 (and Beyond):
Finally, for the last stitches of Row 2 and beyond, we work PHDCs almost all of the way until the end of the row. Work a REGULAR HALF DOUBLE CROCHET stitch into the turning chain from the previous row.
Now, this is what a completed row of PHDC or HDC2Tog should look like.
How to Count This Stitch:
Finally, counting this stitch (the PHDC or HDC2Tog) is just like any other crochet stitch. You can count the “Vs” on the top of the work to count your stitches.
