What Can Granny Squares Be Used For?
Granny squares are one of the most versatile building blocks in crochet, which is why they’ve remained a favorite for generations. A single granny square can be turned into a coaster or appliqué, while multiple squares can be joined together to create blankets, afghans, baby gifts, and throws of any size. They’re also perfect for modern projects like tote bags, market bags, pillow covers, scarves, shawls, and even garments such as cardigans and vests. Because granny squares are worked in small sections, they’re ideal for stash-busting, travel projects, and mixing colors and textures to create truly one-of-a-kind handmade pieces. You’re going to love my Puff Flower Granny Square Crochet Pattern and hopefully create many fun crochet projects with!
Materials Needed for the Puff Flower Granny Square
Size 4 Medium Weight Yarn (I used 4 different colors)
Size I 5.5mm Crochet Hook
Scissors
Yarn Needle
Optional: Blocking Board
Crochet Stitches Used In This Tutorial
Puff Stitch (Puff) Puff Stitch (YO, insert hook into the MC, YO, pull through the MC 4 times. There will be 9 loops on the crochet hook. YO and pull through all 9 loops!).
Round 1
Please note that I originally used a regular Magic Ring for the start of this project. I have come to prefer using the Double Magic Ring because it gives more security and strength to the center of granny squares. You could also begin this project by chaining 4, and then join to the 1st chain to create a circle. The first round could then be worked into that ring.
Puff Flower Granny Square Step One
Begin with Color A Create a Magic Circle, Chain 1.
Now, into the Magic Circle place 8 Puff Stitch (YO, insert hook into the MC, YO, pull through the MC 4 times. There will be 9 loops on the crochet hook. YO and pull through all 9 loops), Chain 1 combinations.

Step 2
Next, tighten the Magic Circle to close the center.

Final Step Puff Granny Square Round 1
Now, join with a Slip Stitch to the top of the first Puff Stitch to close the round. Cut square free from yarn. Fasten off. Weave in ends. The stitch count for this round is: 16.

Puff Flower Granny Square Round 2
Now the key to this round is correct stitch placement. Please see the photo below for a visual of where to place your stitches for this round of crochet.

Round 2 Step 1
Begin Round 2 by bringing in Color B (for my Granny Square it is the green yarn). Join the new yarn with a Slip Stitch to any of the Chain 1 spaces from the previous round.

Puff Flower Granny Square Round 2 Step 2
Now with the new color, chain 1. Now, into the same space place (Puff Stitch, Chain 1, Puff Stitch, Chain 1).

Round 2 Step 3
Next repeat (Puff Stitch, Chain 1, Puff Stitch, Chain 1) in each chain 1 space around the square.

Puff Flower Granny Square Round 2 Step 4
Now to finish the round, join with a slip stitch to the top of the very first puff stitch. After that cut your yarn free from the skein, fasten off, and then weave in ends. This completes Round 2. There are 32 stitches in this round of crochet.
