How to Crochet a Big Crochet Flower
I will admit that I am a sucker for a big crochet flower. They are pretty, fun to make, and add a fun decorative detail to many crocheted projects. I love putting crochet flowers on crocheted headbands and hats, and they also make a great addition to housewares such as throw pillows! I was looking for a flower with a slightly different look than my Large Crochet Flower Pattern, but after searching for a while and not finding what I wanted I decided to create my own. After a little messing around this flower was the result. I hope you enjoy making it as much as I do! Let’s learn how to crochet a big crochet flower!
Materials Needed for the Big Crochet Flower:
Medium weight – size 4 yarn
J (6.00mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
Crochet Terms Used:
Magic Circle
Slip Stitch (Sl St)
Chain (Ch)
Single Crochet (SC)
Half Double Crochet (HDC)
Treble Crochet (TR)
Double Crochet Cluster (DCCL) – Yarn Over, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), YO, insert hook into SAME stitch, YO and pull through (4 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through all 3 loops. This completes one DCCL.
Round 1 – How to Crochet a Big Crochet Flower:
Begin with a magic circle. Chain 2.
Place a double crochet into the magic circle. Ch 1. [DCCL, Ch 1] 7 times into the magic circle. Pull the magic circle tight. Sl st to the top of the first DC.
Round 2:
Slip stitch into the nearest chain 1 space from the previous round. Into this chain 1 space place the following : (Chain 1, HDC, TR, HDC, Ch 1, Sl St). In the next chain 1 space: (SC, Ch 1, HDC, TR, HDC, Ch 1, Sl St) repeat 6 more times in the remaining 6 chain 1 spaces from the first round.
Round 3:
This round will be worked on the backside of the flower.
Chain 4. Slip Stitch around the slip stitch from the previous row. Repeat until there are 8 chain 4 loops on the backside of the flower.
The final slip stitch of the round goes into the first chain from the first chain 4 of this round.
How to Crochet a Big Crochet Flower – Round 4:
For this round we will be working into the chain 4 spaces that were created in round 3.
In the first chain 4 space place ALL of the following stitches: SC, Ch 1, HDC, TR, TR, HDC, Ch 1, Sl St. This completes one petal of the flower.
Repeat placing (SC, Ch 1, HDC, TR, TR, HDC, Ch 1, Sl St) in each of the seven remaining chain 4 space. There will be a total of 8 petals for this round.
Big Crochet Flower – Round 5:
This round will be worked on the backside of the flower.
Chain 5. Bring this chain 5 to the backside of the flower. Slip stitch around the nearest Sl St from the previous round (each petal from Round 4 ended with a Sl St). Repeat 6 times.
Chain 5. Slip Stitch to the 1st chain from the first chain 5 of this round.
There will be 8 chain 5 loops on the back of the flower.
How to Crochet a Big Crochet Flower – Round 6:
For this round, the crochet stitches will be placed in the Chain 5 loops from round 5.
Into the first chain 5 loop from the hook place all of the following stitches: SC, Ch 1, HDC, TR, TR, TR, HDC, Ch 1, Sl St. This completes one petal. Repeat in the next 6 chain 5 loops.
In the final chain 5 loop place the following stitches: SC, Ch 1, HDC, TR, TR, TR, HDC, Ch 1, Sl St. Since this is the last petal of the flower, slip stitch into the 1st SC from the 1st petal. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Now your flower is complete! It makes a great addition to crocheted headbands and hats. Let me know what you think of this pattern!
Many Blessings,
