How to Crochet a Buffalo Plaid Flower Headband

Materials Needed for the Buffalo Plaid Headband:

H crochet hook (5.0mm) – for the body of the crochet ear warmer

I crochet hook (5.5mm) – for the flower for the crochet ear warmer

Dark hue (I usually use black) medium weight yarn – Color #1

Medium hue (I usually use maroon) medium weight yarn – Color #2

Light hue (I usually use red) medium weight yarn – Color #3

Medium weight yarn for the flower (I like the look of a more rustic tan or white color for the flower – in this tutorial I used Lion Brand’s Wool Ease yarn in Linen color) – Color #4

2 buttons – at least 1″ in diameter

Yarn needle

Scissors

Crochet Stitches Used:

Chain Stitch (Ch)

Half Double Crochet Stitch (HDC)

DEEP Half Double Crochet Stitch (Deep HDC)

Buffalo Plaid Stitch (using HDC)

Single Crochet Stitch (SC)

Magic Circle (MC)

Crochet Slip Stitch (Sl St)

Double Crochet Stitch (DC)

Half Double Crochet Two Together (HDC2Tog)

How to Crochet the Buffalo Plaid Stitch:

How to Deep Half Double Crochet Stitch:

To Start the Crochet Buffalo Plaid Flower Headband:

Begin the crochet buffalo plaid headband with the DARK HUE yarn (I use black).

Start by chaining 5.

Row 1:

Next, place one Half Double Crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook. Place 1 HDC in each remaining chain. (4)

Crochet Buffalo Plaid Headband – Row 2:

Chain 1, turn. Place 1 Deep HDC in the 1st stitch, ch 2, place 2 Deep HDC in the last stitch. (5)

Row 3:

Start by chaining 1 and turning. Begin by putting 2 Deep HDC in the 1st stitch. Put 2 Deep HDC in the ch 2 space, and place 2 Deep HDC in the last stitch. (6)

Crochet Buffalo Plaid – Row 4:

Ch 1, turn. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across. (6)

Row 5:

Begin by chaining 1 and turning. Place 2 Deep HDCs in the first stitch. Put 1 Deep HDC in the next 4 HDCs. Now, place 2 Deep HDCs in the last stitch. (8)

Headband Row 6:

Start by chaining 1 and turning. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across the row. (8)

Row 7:

Chain 1, turn. Place 2 Deep HDC in the 1st stitch. Put one Deep HDC in each of the next 6 stitches. Now, place 2 Deep HDC in the last stitch. (10)

How to Crochet a Buffalo Plaid Flower Headband Row 8:

Start by chaining 1 and turning. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across. (10)

Row 9:

Chain 1, turn. Place 2 Deep HDC in the first stitch. Place one Deep HDC in each of the next 8 stitches. Put 2 Deep HDC in the last stitch. (12)

Buffalo Plaid Crochet Headband – Row 10:

Begin by chaining 1 and turning. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across the row. (12)

Starting Into the Buffalo Plaid Stitch – Row 11:

Start this row by chaining 1 and turning (still with the black yarn). Place one FULL Deep HDC in the each of the first 3 stitches.

For the 4th Deep HDC in black: YO, insert the hook into the next stitch, YO with the black and pull through the stitch. There are now 3 black loops on the crochet hook.

Now it is time to introduce Yarn Color #2, the maroon (medium) yarn. With Color #2 (maroon), YO and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

Repeat this process with Color #2 (maroon). 1 Deep HDC in the next 3 stitches.

Switch color halfway through the 4th maroon Deep HDC (just like we did switching from the black to the maroon).

With the BLACK yarn, place one Deep HDC in each of the next 4 stitches. Make sure to carry the maroon yarn across in the middle of the stitches. (12)

This completes Row 11.

Row 12:

With BLACK, Ch 1 and turn.

Before doing anything with this row, push the maroon yarn up so that it will ride along the tops of the previous row’s stitches. The maroon yarn will be carried across in the middle of the stitches.

With BLACK, place one Deep HDC in each of the first 3 stitches.

In the next stitch, start the 4th Deep HDC with BLACK. Yarn over, insert the hook into the 4th stitch, YO with BLACK, pull through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the hook.

Now, with MAROON, YO and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

Place one MAROON Deep HDC in each of the next 3 stitches.

Now, start the next Deep HDC with MAROON in the next stitch. With MAROON, YO, insert the hook into the next stitch, with MAROON, YO and pull through the stitch. Now there are 3 loops on the crochet hook.

Next, drop the maroon yarn and pick up the BLACK yarn. With BLACK, YO and pull through all 3 loops on the crochet hook.

With the BLACK yarn, place one Deep HDC in each of the next 4 stitches. Remember to carry the maroon yarn across inside of the black HDCs. (12)

This completes Row 12.

How to Crochet a Buffalo Plaid Flower Headband – Row 13:

At this point, I cut the black yarn off (this is a personal preference, you can keep carrying the yarn throughout, but be prepared to untangle the yarn more!).

With MAROON, Ch 1 and turn. Place one Deep HDC in each of the first 3 stitches.

With MAROON (Color #2), YO, insert the hook into the next stitch for a Deep HDC, with MAROON, YO and then pull through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the crochet hook.

Now we introduce Color #3 (the red yarn in this example). Take the red (Color #3), YO and pull through all 3 loops on the crochet hook.

With RED (Color #3), place one Deep HDC in each of the next 3 stitches.

With RED, YO, insert the hook into the next stitch for a Deep HDC, with RED, YO and then pull through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the crochet hook.

Drop the red (Color #3), with MAROON (Color #2) YO and pull through all 3 loops on the crochet hook.

Now, with the MAROON (Color #2), place one Deep HDC each of the next 4 stitches. This completes Row 13. (12)

Remember to carry the red yarn across in the middle of these maroon stitches.

Row 14:

With MAROON (Color #2), Ch 1 and turn.

Before completing any stitches, push the red yarn up so that it can be carried across the work inside of the maroon stitches.

Now, with MAROON (Color #2), place one Deep HDC in each of the first 3 stitches.

In the 4th stitch, YO with MAROON (Color #2), insert the hook into the 4th stitch, YO again with MAROON, pull through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the crochet hook.

At this point, drop the maroon. Pick up the RED (Color #3). With RED, YO and pull through all 3 loops.

With RED (Color #3), place one Deep HDC in each of the next 3 stitches.

In the next stitch, use RED (Color #3). With RED, YO, insert the hook into the next stitch for a Deep HDC, with RED, YO again and pull through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the crochet hook.

Now, drop the red yarn and pick up the MAROON (Color #2). With MAROON (Color #2) YO and pull through all 3 loops.

With the MAROON (Color #2), place one Deep HDC in each of the last 4 stitches. This completes Row 14. (12)

Row 15:

Repeat Row 11 (This is a black, maroon, black row). (12)

Row 16:

Repeat Row 12 (This is another black, maroon, black row). (12)

Row 17:

Repeat Row 13 (This is a maroon, red, maroon row). (12)

Row 18:

Cut off the maroon at this point. We will only work with black (Color #1) from this point on.

How to Crochet a Buffalo Plaid Flower Headband – Row 53:

With BLACK (Color #1), ch 1, turn. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across. (12)

Row 54:

This is a DECREASE row.

Ch 1, turn. HDC 2 tog, place one Deep HDC in each of the next 8 stitches. HDC 2 tog. (10).

We have decreased our stitch count from 12 down to 10 stitches in a row.

Row 55:

Ch 1, turn. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across. (10)

Crochet Buffalo Plaid Flower Headband – Row 56:

This is a DECREASE row.

Ch 1, turn. HDC 2 tog. Place one Deep HDC in each of the next 6 stitches. HDC 2 tog. (8)

We have reduced our stitch count for the rows from 10 down to 8 stitches in each row.

Row 57:

Chain 1 and turn. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across. (8)

Row 58:

This is another DECREASE row.

Chain 1, turn. HDC 2 tog. Place one DEEP HDC in each of the next 4 stitches. HDC 2 tog (6)

We have reduced the number of stitches for our rows from 8 down to 6 stitches.

Row 59:

Start by chaining 1 and turning. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across. (6)

How to Crochet a Buffalo Plaid Flower Headband – Row 60:

This is the last DECREASE row.

Chain 1, turn. HDC 2 tog. Place one Deep HDC in each of the next 2 stitches. HDC 2 tog. (4)

We have reduced our stitch count from 6 stitches to 4 stitches.

Row 61:

Begin by chaining 1 and turning. Place one Deep HDC in each stitch across. (4)

Weaving in Ends:

At this point I weave in all of the ends EXCEPT for the yarn that is still attached to the yarn skein (we still have to SC around the headband before we weave this in).

Finishing the edges of the Headband:

Chain 1, turn. Place one SC in each of the first 3 stitches.

In the 4th stitch, place 2 SC.

Now, SC along the long edge of the headband until you get to the other end.

When you get to the other end, place 2 SC in the 1st stitch of that end.

Place one SC in the next 2 stitches.

Place 2 SC in the corner stitch.

Next, SC along the other long edge of the headband until you get back to where you started.

Sl st to the 1st SC. Fasten off the yarn. Cut the yarn free from the skein of yarn and weave in this last end.

Creating the Flower for the Headband:

Create the Flower for this headband using this pattern. I used an I (5.5mm) crochet hook for this headband instead of a J (6.0mm) crochet hook. That is the only change. It can be found on my webpage here:

Sewing the Flower on the Headband:

Now we are ready to sew the flower onto the headband. Gather your flower, headband, yarn needle, scissors, and 1 of the 2 buttons.

Place the flower on the headband in the correct location. The flower is placed a little bit off of center.

Using the yarn tails, sew the flower down onto the headband. If you need to see how to do this, check out our You Tube video for this headband!

After the flower is sewn to the headband, cut a piece of yarn that is at least 12″ long. Use this piece of yarn to sew the button onto the middle of the flower. If you need to see how to do this, again check out our You Tube video tutorial for this

Sewing the Button Onto the Headband:

With the black yarn, cut a 12″ long piece of yarn. Sew the other button onto the opposite side from the button hole. Weave in ends.
